OpenAI improves ChatGPT’s memory, available to users for free

OpenAI has explained how it has improved the memory feature of ChatGPT. Memory was introduced in 2024, allowing chatbots to remember things that users had shared with the AI, and be able to recall it when needed. Early versions of these were rudimentary, and the company recognized that memories would become obsolete over time, and were unreliable. And that’s exactly what OpenAI aims to do with the latest update.

To do this, OpenAI created something called dreamingWhich runs in the background, and lets ChatGPT synthesize data from different chats. The new memory architecture is a more efficient and scalable system. Users can access the memory summary created by ChatGPT, and make changes to it at any time.

OpenAI says the memory update is available to Plus and Pro users in the US, and will be rolled out to more countries and Free and Go users in the coming weeks. ChatGPT’s Dreaming-based memory, a feature that until now was exclusive to Plus and Pro users, is now available to free users. OpenAI says recent improvements to this feature have reduced the computation required to provide the service to free users by approximately 5 times. This will allow AI to use advanced memory and context in chats. The dream-based memory will be available to users for free in the coming weeks.
